That's what we aim for at Falmouth Surf School. Surfing is so enjoyable and satisfying in part to being so close to our natural environment and in such beautiful surroundings. Keeping it this way is one of our priorities and we hope that after a surfing experience with us, you will feel as strongly about keeping our wonderful country clean and green.
When I started working for Falmouth Surf School in 2005, it was my main focus to convert the business into being the first completely green surf school in Cornwall. On our way to achieving this there has (and still are) been some major changes to the business. Here are but a few:
-
We use energy saving light bulbs in our office.
-
All staff drinks organic, fair-trade tea and coffee.
-
We recycle all office paper.
-
All of the company’s records and data have been computerised where possible.
-
We use vegetable based ink on all advertising material.
-
We aim to leave no trace of our visit when we leave the beach, so prompt our customers to do so too.
-
In order to update our office we used www.freecycle.org to give old equipment away instead of increasing our local landfill.
It is a start but we still have a long way to go… on my mind from the beginning has been the fact that we are a mobile school so therefore use an enormous amount of diesel per month to transport customers to the best beaches in Cornwall.
To cut down on our carbon emissions it is our top priority to run all of FSS’S vehicles on ‘vegetable oil’ by 2009. Quite a tall order you may say but we have received a lot of advice on this subject www.vegburner.co.uk and it is gradually becoming possible for most vehicles to convert AND it’s cheaper! So there is nothing stopping you too!
We are also in the process of investigating the most environmentally sound way to travel to France for our ski-ing & snowboarding holidays link to winter breaks pg .I will keep you posted on this.
This is not a page to preach but I feel very strongly that we can all contribute to preserving our natural environment on a large scale by using less energy and water; recycling and buying ecologically sound products etc. It is also crucial that we keep the local environment as clean and pollution-free as possible because a tiny amount of effort from each person can make a massive difference.
If surfing on clean, sandy Atlantic beaches doesn't inspire you to actively conserve
our earth, then a better planet for our children's generation surely will!
